Using your own car for work in Australia can be a financial black hole or a savvy tax strategy, depending on your record-keeping skills. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) allows you to claim deductions for work-related car expenses, but only if your personal use is negligible and you can prove it. Key methods include the cents per kilometre method (claim up to 5,000 km at a fixed rate) and the logbook method (claim actual expenses based on work-use percentage). Remember, commuting from home to your regular workplace is generally off-limits for claims—don’t expect a free ride.

Keep detailed records and receipts, or you’ll be stuck paying retail prices for your sins. For more info and to avoid the ATO’s wrath, check out ServiceCentral or the official ATO website. Treat your car like a business asset, not a magic money tree.
