ute review 2023

Australia’s 2023 ute lineup was a dust-up of techy workhorses and weekend-warrior toys; all tow, all swagger, some actually comfy.

Here’s the brisk, no-nonsense rundown you wanted (with just enough sass to keep you awake).

• Ford Ranger (T6.2) — Pros: class-leading cabin tech, strong V6 diesel option, polished ride; Cons: higher prices, options creep, some wait times.
• Toyota HiLux (N80) — Pros: bulletproof reputation, resale, off-road cred; Cons: ageing platform, firmer ride, less punch and refinement than newer rivals.
• Isuzu D‑MAX — Pros: standard safety kit, honest 3.0L diesel, value; Cons: cabin NVH and steering feel still a bit farm-spec.
• VW Amarok (2023) — Pros: plush interior, strong V6, towing confidence; Cons: price and options bundles can sting, limited dealer coverage outside big towns.
• Mitsubishi Triton (pre-2024) — Pros: sharp pricing and warranty; Cons: older platform, modest power and space by 2023 standards.
