vehicle and traffic act 1999 Page 4

The Vehicle and Traffic Act 1999 is Tasmania’s core law for how vehicles and drivers are regulated on public roads.

It underpins vehicle registration, driver licensing, vehicle standards/roadworthiness, and grants enforcement powers to authorities.

It also defines offences and penalties for things like unlicensed driving, using an unregistered vehicle, and failing defect notices, with detailed rules delivered by supporting regulations.

In short, it’s the legal plumbing behind everyday road use in Tassie—check the current Tasmanian legislation for the fine print because amendments do occur.
