In Victoria, a car transfer is done via myVicRoads within 14 days of purchase—miss that and you’ll be paying more than just duty.

The seller provides a current Roadworthy Certificate (unless exempt) and a signed transfer, and should lodge a Notice of Disposal so any future fines don’t boomerang back to them.

The buyer submits the transfer online, uploads the RWC, and pays the transfer fee plus motor vehicle duty (based on the higher of sale price or market value).

Plates usually stay with the car unless they’re custom and the seller is keeping them.

Family transfers and some special cases can be duty/RWC‑exempt, but only if you tick the right boxes.
