In Victoria it’s called a Certificate of Roadworthiness, and it’s less “spa day for your car” and more “does it safely stop, steer and see at night?”. Licensed vehicle testers check the basics—tyres, brakes, steering/suspension, lights, windscreen/wipers, seatbelts/seats, body structure and leaks—not every bush, bearing or Bluetooth widget. It’s generally required to transfer registration or to re‑register an unregistered car; selling unregistered? You can skip it, but the buyer will need one to put plates back on. The certificate is typically valid for 30 days from issue in Vic, so don’t dilly‑dally with the paperwork. Expect to pay for the inspection and any repairs, plus a re‑test fee if it fails—prices vary with the vehicle and tester. Pro tip: fix obvious faults first and spare yourself the inspector’s disappointed sigh.
