In Victoria, a “VicRoads roadworthy” is really a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) issued by a licensed tester—not VicRoads themselves.

You’ll need one to sell or transfer a registered vehicle, re-register a car that’s been off the road, or clear a defect notice; you don’t need it just to renew rego.

It checks safety items—tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, lights, windscreen, seatbelts, and structural rust—not whether the engine’s secretly plotting its retirement.

Certificates are typically valid for 30 days from issue, and the inspection usually costs around AUD 150–250 plus any repairs.
