In Victoria, a VicRoads roadworthy (RWC) is a safety check to prove a vehicle’s fit for registration transfer, not a crystal ball for future breakdowns.
Licensed Vehicle Testers inspect essentials like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, lights, windscreen, body/structural rust, seats and seatbelts.
Expect to pay roughly AUD 150–300 for a standard car inspection; repairs and rechecks are extra, because nothing screams ‘budget blowout’ like worn bushings.
The certificate is generally valid for 30 days from issue for transfer or re‑registration, and the car must match the condition it was tested in.
It doesn’t guarantee everything works (air-con and infotainment can be as flaky as a meat pie), so consider a pre-purchase inspection as well.
