In Victoria, driving a vehicle on public roads with no number plates is illegal unless you’ve got a VicRoads Unregistered Vehicle Permit (UVP) and the permit is properly displayed. If your plates are lost or stolen, report it to the police and VicRoads, then order replacements; don’t keep driving around bare like a stealth fighter. Need to move an unregistered car for a roadworthy or repair? Get a UVP/temporary movement permit from VicRoads and follow the permit’s route, date and time conditions. If you’ve just bought or sold a car, transfer and fit plates before normal use; fines for getting this wrong are far steeper than a set of screws and a screwdriver. When in doubt, contact VicRoads—rules change, but the “no plates, no worries” approach never ends well.
