In Victoria, “stamp duty” on cars is the motor vehicle duty you pay when registering or transferring a vehicle, and it’s based on the dutiable value.

That dutiable value is usually the higher of the purchase price or market value, and includes GST (and any Luxury Car Tax), but excludes rego, CTP and plate fees.

Rates are tiered for passenger vehicles and different for commercial vehicles like utes and vans; pricier cars attract higher percentages—shock horror.

Trade-ins don’t reduce the duty because the state wants a slice of the whole pie, not your changeover figure.

Budget a few hundred to several thousand AUD depending on price, and check the State Revenue Office Victoria for the current brackets because they do move.
