Want to avoid buying a car with a past spicier than a vindaloo? Do a VIN check before you even think about handing over cash. In Australia, run the 17‑digit VIN through the national PPSR to see encumbrance, write‑off and stolen status for a small fee, and check state registries for rego and WOVR history. Make sure the VIN on the chassis, build plate and paperwork all match; if they don’t, walk away faster than a seagull from a labrador. Keep the PPSR certificate as proof on Tradingpost or anywhere else—it’s cheap insurance against repossession and other nasties. If anything smells off—missing plates or freshly scratched numbers—report it and move on; there are plenty of honest cars in the sea.
