what are common problems with toyota hilux Page 3

HiLuxes are tough as old boots, but even they have a few gremlins.

Common trouble spots reported in Australia (not every ute, but worth checking):

• DPF clogging/forced regens on 2.8‑litre GD‑6 (2015‑on); many had ECU updates or hardware fixes.
• Injector seat/seal failure on 3.0 D‑4D (1KD‑FTV), leading to blow‑by, oil pickup blockage, and rough starts.
• EGR/turbo soot build-up causing lost power and smoke; periodic cleaning helps.
• Clutch shudder and dual‑mass flywheel wear on manuals; auto torque‑converter shudder when towing heavy.
• Front suspension/ball joints and CVs wearing early when lifted or bull‑barred; wheel‑alignment drift.
• Rear leaf spring sag/squeak and tailshaft centre‑bearing vibration under load.
• Water pump leaks and cooling niggles on high‑km examples in hot work.

Regular servicing with the right oil, timely injector/DPF attention, and cooling upgrades for heavy towing keep most of this at bay.
