James Dean died in a Porsche 550 Spyder, the featherweight racer he’d nicknamed “Little Bastard.” On 30 September 1955, driving to a race, he collided with a 1950 Ford Tudor near Cholame, California. He was at the wheel; his mechanic Rolf Wütherich was the passenger and survived, albeit badly injured. The Spyder wore the number 130 and, yes, it looked as menacing as it sounds. Dean suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after the crash. A grim end in a very small, very fast slice of aluminium legend.
