Short answer: by 2022, mainstream passenger car manufacturing in Australia was done and dusted—no new Holdens, Fords or Toyotas rolling off local lines.
What’s left are low-volume specialists (think Brabham or Bolwell) and local remanufacturing outfits converting imports to RHD, like Walkinshaw (RAM, Silverado) and Premcar (Navara Warrior).
We also still build trucks and buses here—Kenworth in Victoria, plus Volvo and Mack in Queensland—great if your school run involves pallets and a forklift.
So yes, you can still buy something with Aussie handiwork, but it’s niche, hand-built, or a converted import rather than a mass-market “family car.”
If you’re browsing Tradingpost, those conversion badges and build plates are the tell-tales to look for.
