Think of a centre diff lock as the referee that stops your front and rear axles from arguing; flick it on and they turn in sync, sharing torque roughly 50:50.

It’s for loose stuff—gravel, mud, sand—where tyres can slip; on high-grip bitumen it can cause driveline wind-up and a wallet-lightening clunk.

Locking the centre diff reduces wheelspin between axles, improving traction and straight-line control, especially when climbing or towing on sketchy surfaces.

It’s not the same as front or rear locker(s); those bind wheels on the same axle, whereas the centre lock just couples the axles.

Expect tighter turning and sometimes nanny lights, as some ESC/ABS systems dial back the fun when it’s engaged.

Use it when it’s slippery, disengage when it’s not—simple, effective, and far less dramatic than getting bogged up to the sills.
