what is a diff lock Page 57

A diff lock, or differential lock, is a clever little gizmo that forces both wheels on an axle to spin at the same rate, even if one is desperately trying to do the worm in the mud. Normally, differentials let wheels rotate at different speeds—great for corners but terrible off-road or in slippery conditions. Engaging the diff lock ensures maximum traction by preventing wheel spin disparities.

Key point: It's a boon for off-roaders and anyone who enjoys getting stuck on purpose. However, use it only at low speeds and on loose surfaces to avoid nasty drivetrain damage. For more nitty-gritty, check out manuals or forums on ServiceCentral.
