AEB stands for Autonomous Emergency Braking—your car’s way of saying “I’ve got this” when you’re momentarily distracted by a swooping magpie. Using cameras, radar (sometimes lidar), it scans ahead, warns you of an imminent smash, and if you ignore it, automatically hits the brakes. Modern systems can detect vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, and work at city and highway speeds, though not even AEB can bend the laws of physics on wet bitumen. It’s a safety net, not a chauffeur: dirty sensors, blinding sun, or heavy rain can hobble it, and tailgating still ends in panel beaters and regret. In Australia, most new cars include AEB and it’s strongly favoured in ANCAP ratings, which is code for “you want it.”
