A centre diff lock ties the front and rear axles together so they spin at the same speed, boosting traction when surfaces get loose, slippery or just plain silly. It’s brilliant off-road or on mud, sand and snow, because it stops all the torque fleeing to the wheel with the least grip. Use it on high-traction bitumen and you’ll get drivetrain wind-up, scrubbing tyres and a mechanic giving you the look. Some vehicles use a mechanical lock; others simulate it with an electronically controlled clutch—same idea, different plumbing. It’s not the same as front or rear diff locks, which clamp individual axles; this one manages the split between axles. Engage on the rough stuff, disengage when it’s grippy, and your driveline will live to fight another weekend.
