It’s brilliant off-road or on mud, sand and snow, because it stops all the torque fleeing to the wheel with the least grip. Use it on high-traction bitumen and you’ll get drivetrain wind-up, scrubbing tyres and a mechanic giving you the look. Some vehicles use a mechanical lock; others simulate it with an electronically controlled clutch—same idea, different plumbing.
