A repairable write‑off is a vehicle an insurer has declared too costly to fix, but not so mangled it’s banned from the road forever.
It’s recorded on the national Written‑Off Vehicle Register (WOVR), and can return to duty only after proper repairs plus a vehicle identity (VIV) inspection, roadworthy checks, and the usual fees.
That’s different from a statutory write‑off, which is permanently barred from registration.
Rules vary by state: most allow repaired vehicles back on the road if they pass inspections, but NSW heavily restricts re‑registration of repairable write‑offs, with limited exemptions (for example, hail damage or certain older/collectable vehicles).
Buyers should budget for higher insurance premiums, extra paperwork, and a resale haircut—bargains rarely come without a fringe.
