A hybrid car is a tag-team: a petrol engine and an electric motor working together so you burn less fuel without plugging in.
At low speeds or light throttle the motor handles the dull bits, while the engine jumps in for oomph, highway pace, or topping up a small battery.
There are parallel hybrids (both drive the wheels), series hybrids (engine charges, motor drives), and plug-in hybrids that add a bigger battery you can charge at home.
Upsides: quieter city driving and fewer trips to the servo; downsides: more weight and complexity—and no, it won’t magically turn into a full EV at 110 km/h.
If you mostly do short, stop-start trips, a hybrid makes a lot of sense; if you tow or roam the outback, choose carefully.
