Cupra was founded as a standalone brand in 2018, spun out of SEAT’s go‑faster division when the marketing department finally got its own coffee machine.

Before that, “Cupra” was the hot badge on SEATs—short for “Cup Racing”—with roots stretching back to SEAT Sport in 1985.

The 2018 launch planted the flag in Martorell, Spain, with the Cupra Ateca as its first poster child.
