Dirk Hartog didn’t set sail to “discover Australia”; he was a Dutch merchant captain in 1616, racing to Batavia on the VOC’s faster Brouwer Route.
Those roaring forties shoved the Eendracht further east than planned, so he bumped into Western Australia, came ashore at what’s now Dirk Hartog Island, and took stock.
He left a pewter plate with an inscription—basically a 17th-century “I was here”—then carried on toward the spice trade like a man with schedules and bosses.
So, why did he go to Australia? Because the quickest path to Indonesia overshot, and he paused to chart, record, and avoid hazards—not to plant a flag and start a colony.
