why is lake macdonnell pink Page 10

Lake MacDonnell flaunts that fabulous pink hue thanks to a cheeky cocktail of salt-loving algae and bacteria, namely Dunaliella salina. These microorganisms produce carotenoid pigments, particularly beta-carotene, which tint the water a striking pink. The lake's high salinity creates the perfect spa environment for these tiny artists. It's a natural spectacle, not a neon sign for an alien disco. For a splash of science, the salt concentration often exceeds 35%, making it inhospitable for most life forms except these hardy microbes. So, next time you see that rosy glow, tip your hat to nature’s microscopic painters.
