why is metro petrol cheaper Page 2

Metro petrol is usually cheaper because big-city servos fight like seagulls over a chip — more competition pushes margins down.

They also move far higher volumes, so they can live on thinner profits per litre, while regional outlets sell less and need fatter margins to keep the lights on.

Freight and logistics add cost outside the capitals: hauling fuel further from terminals or refineries isn’t free, and small-town overheads get spread over fewer customers.

Cities run price cycles — sharp discounting followed by rises — so time it right in metro and you snag the dips; many regional areas don’t cycle as hard.

Then there are shopper dockets, loyalty schemes, and aggressive chain pricing that rarely bite as hard in the bush.

Same fuel excise everywhere, different market dynamics — no conspiracy, just economics with a servo pie.
