work related car expenses ato Page 2

Ah, the Australian Tax Office and its labyrinthine rules on work-related car expenses—because who doesn't love a taxing puzzle? In essence, you can claim deductions for the business use portion of your vehicle expenses, including fuel, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation. The ATO typically allows methods like the cents per kilometre or the logbook method to calculate your claim. For cents per kilometre, you can claim up to 5,000 kilometres at 72 cents per kilometre (2023 rates), no receipts needed. The logbook method demands more paperwork but can yield heftier deductions if you do heaps of work driving.

Keep in mind, commuting from home to your regular workplace is a no-go for claims. Always keep records or a logbook to avoid ATO's wrath. For the nitty-gritty, check ServiceCentral or the ATO's official site, or have a chat with your accountant.
