written car off

In Australia, a car is “written off” when an insurer decides it’s a total loss—either repairs cost too much or it’s too unsafe to resurrect.

It lands on the national Written-Off Vehicle Register as either a Statutory Write-Off (never road-registered again) or a Repairable Write-Off (may be rebuilt and re-registered after inspections, subject to state rules).

Expect a payout of the agreed or market value minus excess, any finance cleared first, and the insurer to whisk the wreck away to auction like it owes them money.

Thinking of buying or keeping a repairable write-off? Budget for tougher insurance, lower resale, and identity/roadworthy checks; a clean PPSR report is your new best mate.
