Zero carbon synthetic diesel—often called e-diesel—is brewed by combining green hydrogen with captured CO₂ (think Fischer–Tropsch wizardry) to make a drop-in fuel for regular diesel engines. Tailpipes still puff CO₂, but when the inputs are renewable and the carbon is captured, the overall lifecycle can be near net‑zero, which is the whole magic trick.
It typically works without engine mods, with energy density and performance close to the dino-juice you’re used to. The catch? Price and availability—right now in Australia it’s more pilot projects than servo forecourts, and the dollars per litre will raise an eyebrow and possibly a mortgage broker. Expect early use in hard-to-electrify heavy vehicles or fleets, often as blends before going full synthetic. Brilliant idea, just waiting for scale (and cheaper electrons) to make it less of a boutique fuel.
