The 2003 Nissan Patrol (GU/Y61) is a bush-basher with a few quirks—worth knowing before you punt cash and ego into the scrub.

• Early 3.0 Di diesels had a reputation for overboost and soot buildup leading to piston failures; by 2003 many updates landed, but proof of fixes and sensible tuning still matters.
• Front-end shimmy (“death wobble”) from worn panhard bushes, tie-rod ends, kingpin bearings or poor wheel balance—sorted with fresh bushes, bearings and a proper alignment.
• Intercooler and intake hose leaks cause lag, smoky running and poor economy; look for oil misting around the intercooler and split hoses.
