In Queensland, safety certificates are issued by Approved Examiners working at an Approved Inspection Station (AIS) under the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). To get there, you’ll need a recognised automotive trade qualification (e.g., mechanic) plus recent hands-on experience with the vehicle types you want to inspect. Complete an Approved Examiner training course with a TMR-recognised provider, then apply to TMR with your evidence, ID checks and the relevant fees. You must work through an AIS (join an existing station or set up your own) with the specified equipment and record-keeping—no driveway sticker slapping. Once approved, follow the Vehicle Inspection Guidelines, keep calibration and logbooks tidy, and expect the occasional audit. There are separate endorsements for light vehicles, motorcycles and heavy vehicles, so pick what suits your spanners.
