In 1963 Doug Hele was poached from Norton by BSA-Triumph and promptly set to work designing how to add a cylinder to Triumph’s 500 twin engine, thus giving the famous marque a 750 triple. Project coded the P1, the design was rejected by Triumph’s boss Edward Turner who had his own ideas for a multi-cylinder big bike. Sadly the triple was shelved, but after Turner retired in 65 the BSA Group was desperate for something new in the face of ever-growing rumours surfacing about four-cylinder machines coming from Honda and Kawasaki.

What become known as the ‘Japanese Invasion’ provided Doug Hele with the opportunity to make the P1 a reality, and in a mere few months three complete sets of engine casings were produced and road tested in a 1965 T120 Bonneville rolling chassis. The new management saw the triple as a winner and development went ahead. Who knows what might have happened had Hele been given the green light in 1963!!

This spectacular Mk2 Rocket has been retained in original condition, perfectly maintained and serviced, and is with our Polish partners Moto Ventus. In preparing for sale the bike has received little more than cleaning and polishing of alloy surfaces, some spokes replaced, new tires and engine service, plus fitment of a set of NOS Hurricane exhausts. The motorcycle starts easily, runs and rides perfectly.
