The bike that saved Ducati from bankruptcy and won for them their first of many World Superbike Championships. The Tricolore was Ducati’s first ever 4 valve Superbike and is genuinely the bike that lead to todays’ latest evolution of the world’s most famous road going Superbikes.

Compared to any other twin on the market in 1987, the 851 Tricolore was ground-breaking. Ducati introduced many technological innovations with the 851, non-more so than an open-loop fully-mapped electronic fuel injection system. The Weber Marelli IAW system, originally developed for the Ferrari F40 sports car and for use in Formula One, incorporated a computer with an EPROM (electronically programmable read only memory – AKA chip). This contained a map of fuel and ignition requirements derived from dyno tests. Although the first 851 only produced a modest 102 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, this was considerably more than any other twin available in 1987. The 851 Tricolore is a must-have for any serious collector or Ital bike enthusiast.
