1976 Ducati 900SS

The 1976 900 Supersport is considered the first true “production” 900SS. Designed and fitted with with left-side shifter and turn signals as standard features, it was the first Supersport built to genuine international road legal specification.

Fibreglass fuel tanks were replaced with metal (fiberglass was illegal in the UK and had been banned in the U.S.), and to meet noise and emission requirements the 76’s Dell Orto’s were reduced from 40mm to 32mmm making them infinitely smoother and more rider friendly down low, while the much loved ram-tubes made way for air cleaners. In the noise department, Conti’s were replaced with Lafranconi mufflers, muting that iconic sound and damaging one of the marques best selling features. However, while these mods made the base specification tick the wowser boxes, Ducati, keeping true to their race-orientated marketing philosophy, sold each 76 with a set of Conti mufflers and 40mm carbs with racing ram-tubes which instantly returned the 76 to race-status.

The example offered here is Austral delivered and was restored several years ago and ridden sparingly. Until Nov 2017 the bike was on full registration but then sat idle before undergoing a freshen up for selling. Carby’s have been removed, vapour blasted and received full overhaul kits, all brake callipers have been stripped and received new O-ring kits, front & back brake master cylinders stripped and received service kits, swing-arm bushes & wheel bearings, all hardware removed, cleaned and re-zinc plated, Sachse electronic ignition, coils and new rec/reg, and battery. This bike presents in excellent condition, starts easily, sounds strong and requires nothing more spent.
