1988 Laverda Formula 500 TT2

Designed primarily to avoid Italy’s excessive big-bore tax for new bikes, the first Laverda 500’s were sold new as race bikes, but buyers received a box of road going bits to make road legal, thus avoiding the 35% sales tax.

Owing to, and in support of the successful marketing strategy, Laverda organised a one-make racing category, the Laverda Formula Cup which ran in Italy and Germany from 1979 to 1981. Based on the road-going version, Laverda produced the Formula 500 TT2 specifically for the new racing category. Fitted with higher compression pistons, special camshafts, open racing exhausts and special light-weight fiberglass bodywork, power increased to 52hp while weight was reduced to 154kg; all Formula TT2 were painted orange, and a special fully faired version was produced for the UK and US markets.

This beautiful example was raced in the Ital Championship in 1981/82 and approximately 10 years ago underwent a full restoration by a recognised Laverda specialist during which the engine size was increased to 600cc.
