The Honda XLV750R is regarded as the first dual-purpose motorcycle, manufactured from 1983 to 1986, the XLV750R was forerunner to what is now the world’s biggest selling range of motorcycle. The prototype was released at the Paris Motor Show in October 1982. The XLV was initially intended only for the European market, but from 85 it was also sold in Australia and New Zealand, countries ideally suited to the bike’s dual use (road/off-road). At start of production, Honda had HRC build 500 “Limited Edition” models, which are identified by a golden metal badge attached to the right side of the auxiliary frame (below the seat). Limited Edition models also received a perforated front brake disc rotor.

The XLV750R (Honda type designation: RD01) was also Honda’s first dual-sport bike to not use the traditional single or parallel cylinder engines, but rather an air-/oil-cooled V-twin engine with hydraulic valve tappets and shaft drive. Those two construction features make the XLV a very low maintenance motorcycle. Other technical highlights worth noting, and quite Avant-garde for the time, were introduction of a dry sump lubrication system (with the main frame acting as an oil tank); three valve cylinder heads (two inlet valves / one exhaust valve) using two spark plugs per cylinder, and the crankshaft utilised off-set pins. The engine proved super reliable and capable of use in extreme conditions.

This particular Limited Edition model is number 318 of 500, is patina perfect and traveled only 19,000k’s. The engine runs beautifully, the bikes rides smooth and requires no work. There’s a couple of minor scuffs and a small dent on the tank, but otherwise in perfect condition and appearance.
