How to choose furniture that will stand the test of time
Instant results are a standard expectation in today’s world. Whether it’s a fully furnished new home or an instant garden, we want it all and we want it now. But take a deep breath and try a slower approach to furniture acquisition – it’s a sure way to get value and quality for your dollars.
Choose your furniture wisely
First, think carefully about exactly what furniture you most need and want. What are your special interests? If you love movies and music, lounge and home theatre gear may rank high on your list; if cooking and entertaining are your passion, quality kitchen ware and a dining suite could be your first priority.
Take your time and make a list of all the furniture items you would like to upgrade or acquire. Rank the pieces in order of importance and set yourself a realistic, long-term time frame in which to gradually realize your furniture dreams. This may be 10 or 20 years. Pace yourself and purchase one or two items from the list each year.
Furniture for the long term
Quality and timelessness – classic pieces – will save you money in the long term. Picture yourself (with your furniture) 20 years down the track. That expensive sprung leather couch starts to look like a bargain when you compare it to the three cheap couches you could have bought and discarded in the same lifespan. By opting for high quality, classic items, you can surround yourself (gradually) with timeless luxury, slowly but surely.
Finding the right furniture
Build your color scheme around a single classic tone such as tan, navy, black or chocolate or dark green. Pick your favorite and stay in harmony when making subsequent purchases. Opt for high-quality, durable upholstery fabrics that withstand wear and tear over time.
Look for furniture with multiple uses. Storage space is nearly always at a premium, so preference furniture with built in space. This could be a coffee table with drawers, or a window seat with a hinged top to accommodate games underneath. Go for symmetry and buy items such as lamps, chairs and cushions in pairs.
Spice up your décor by adding new soft furnishings and accessories such as bright cushions, throw rugs, table runners, wall art and big coffee-table bowls. These can be updated and mixed around regularly to match the seasons and add variety.
Opting for pre-loved, quality furniture can allow you to have your cake and save money, too!
