Think carefully and consult widely before deciding the specifications. It is better to err on the side of too big than too small because you don’t want to find you need to carry equipment that your new builders trailer cannot accommodate. If you are just starting out in business, you might be surprised by how much information you can get from the trailer manufacturers who have doubtless encountered many stories from their customers. It is stating the obvious but a builders trailer has to work for you.
It is a good idea to consider resale value. If your design is too far from the mainstream, it will be harder to sell. But most popular does not always equal best. Does the builders trailer need to be fully enclosed? Will you be moving around inside it? Then you will need to think about the height of the roof. What kinds of doors do you need? With a fully enclosed builders trailer, you might choose to have a ramp door. These can be heavy and some form of spring-assistance is a good investment. You should also consider a side door so that you don’t have to lower the ramp every time you want access, (the builders trailer is often with you all day!) Barn doors might be a good alternative. A single axle ‘butterfly lid’ or ‘briefcase’ design could be your entry point work tractor. At the other end of the spectrum are seriously heavy duty dual axle models with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of two tonnes or more.
Even a quite compact builders trailer can use dual axles for additional durability and easier towing. An extended drawbar will make reversing much easier. You can also fit a tool box here without extending the overall length of the rig.
If you are towing more than 750 kilograms you need trailer brakes. Many people underestimate the combined weight of trailer and load, so use a weighbridge to confirm the weight of the unladen builders trailer. It is not difficult for a substantial single axle trailer to weigh up to 800 kilograms.
